Creating a Twitter Feed using jQuery

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 | By: Justin Kozuch

As most of you already know, Twitter is growing in leaps and bounds. With an estimated 4.5 million users on Twitter, Twitter is easier & quicker than writing a blog, it lets you be part of the conversation, and it can be used for almost everything.

Growing tiny speakers into big ones

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 | By: Elaine Chen

After the StayFresh event at the Centre for Social Innovation wrapped up last week, Cameron and Max from Big Bang Technology lingered to help me and Justin clean up (i.e. finish the beer).

Cameron and Max commented that they could tell who had a lot of experience presenting to an audience, and who didn’t. “A good audience,” Cameron said, “should boo a bad speaker off the stage.”

Max shook his head. “This isn’t TED or An Event Apart. But all those big speakers, they have to start somewhere. They start out tiny, and grow big.

“The people who spoke tonight,” he said, “are the people who will go on to speak at TED and An Event Apart, and Refresh should be nurturing them.”

Max hit the nail right on the head; one of our objectives is to nurture you. So we have two Ignite presentation spots left for the StayFresh meetup on April 20. This is an opportunity for you to hone your presentation skills in front of a (mostly) forgiving audience of peers and industry folk. (And if you couldn’t get a ticket before it sold out, this is one way you can attend.)

If you’re interested in speaking, email [email protected] with the details of your proposed presentation. The subject matter is up to you: talk about a product or an app you worked on, or anything you’re passionate about. No matter what level of experience you have, we want you to step up. You can do it. We know you can, because one day you’re going to be big.

We Made A Mistake :(

Friday, March 27th, 2009 | By: Justin Kozuch

Every once in a while, we tend to make mistakes. Like forgetting to take out the garbage, or doing the dishes (it’s my turn tonight).

Today though, we made a big mistake. And we’re not happy about it at all. Before announcing our latest event, we neglected to send out the details in the newsletter. Under ordinary circumstances, we’d simply send out another newsletter and then all would be well (or so we’d hope).

However, this is not an ordinary circumstance by any means. You see, we completely sold out our next event in only 3 hours. This left us not only shocked, but completely caught off-guard. We could not have anticipated the demand we saw today, and as such, we weren’t able to collect all the content in time for the newsletter, as well as post event information across any other networks before the 60 tickets were quickly snatched up.

We realize that you signed up for our newsletter to receive news about our events, and in that regard, we’ve failed you. We are truly sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you. But we have learned from our mistake. To prevent this from ever happening again, we pledge to announce the event in a newsletter fully 24 hours before we publicize it anywhere else (including our own website).

Once again, we’d like to apologize for this error. Each of you have been critical to our success, and we hope our actions today have not diminished your support for which we have worked so hard to attain. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email [email protected].

StayFresh06 Content Roundup

Friday, March 27th, 2009 | By: Justin Kozuch

Just a quick post with a roundup of Refresh Events/StayFresh06 content that we’ve been seeing in the last few days.

First, we’ve uploaded all presentations and audio (we are still working on Peter’s) to our SlideSpace. As most of you already know, our podcast is also online now at http://www.refresh-events.ca/blog/2009/03/26/stayfresh-podcast-episode-2/

We’d like to give a BIG thanks to Rannie Turingan for the amazing photography work he did for our event. If you are looking for an incredibly talented photographer, I highly recommend that you get in touch with him.

Big thanks to Sarah Prevette from RedWire and Elaine Chen who helped us with setting up on the evening of the event. Thanks as well to Max Cameron and Cameron Westland from Big Bang Technology for helping us tear down and clean up after the event, and for the post-event writeup.

Some other post-event content that deserves to be mentioned:

StayFresh07: Tom Purves, Mobile & Ignites (Again!)

Friday, March 27th, 2009 | By: Justin Kozuch

As a society, we have become increasingly dependent on getting our information while we are on the move. Larger screen, more powerful devices and the advent of third party applications for the iPhone have changed the way we look at mobile and the mobile web.
