Thank You

Monday, August 24th, 2009 | By: Justin Kozuch

When the idea to create a organization designed to help connect and educate those in Toronto’s interactive & marketing community came to us in July of 2008, little did we know that we were about to embark on the journey of a lifetime. We didn’t have many connections, we didn’t have much money, but we knew that the people of Toronto deserved better, that they would find value in a community built around those values of creating connections, providing educational opportunities, discussing the pressing issues and navigating the new landscape of our industry.

But it wasn’t until the first hohoTO on December 15th, 2008 when we realized that our community could come together to be part of something bigger, something that could change the way we meet, learn and interact with others. And we knew we wanted to be the force that could help drive this change.

And while we have experienced our fair share of ups and downs, and faced numerous challenges and opposition, we have emerged stronger and more committed to our cause. We have had the chance to meet many incredibly talented individuals through our Dark Horse Friday’s initiative, we’ve seen first hand the effects our gatherings have on people, and we consider ourselves very fortunate to have been there to help create these new connections.

We are grateful for each day and each opportunity we have to help connect you with the people you would like to meet, to help find you find employees or get work, to aid in the creation of partnerships and alliances, and collaborate with each other. We take great pride in the quality of our monthly gatherings, and the support we have from the community is more valuable to us than anything else.

We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of you who have spoken at and attended our events. To those of you who have supported us by spreading the word about what we do. To those of you who have emailed and called with your offers of assistance; we couldn’t have done it without you and the inspiring spirit of service you’ve shown us over the past 12 months.

Here’s to the next year, and many more to come. We’ll see you tonight.

Community Interviews

Thursday, August 20th, 2009 | By: Justin Kozuch

A few weeks ago, we wrote a blog post entitled “The Way Forward, Part Two“. In it, we asked a series of questions centred around improving our product.

You may have noticed today that we launched the Guest Blogger Program. This was borne out of a meeting we had early on with a member of our community. We have since sifted through our attendee registration lists and have selected core members of our community, and those emails will be sent out today (some of you have already responded, thank you!).

These interviews are centred around 4 questions:

  1. What do you like about our events?
  2. What do you dislike about our events?
  3. Who would you like to hear speak at our events?
  4. If you could change one thing about what we do, what would it be?

But we’re not just sticking with that core group. We’d like to hear from you as well! If you have attended an event in the past (or even if you haven’t), and you’re interested in the programming that we offer, we’d like to talk with you. Drop us a note or hit us up on Twitter to setup a meeting (we’ll even buy the coffee!). Alternatively, you can post up in the comments below. ↓

Guest Blogger Program

Thursday, August 20th, 2009 | By: Justin Kozuch

We’re always happy to have people write guest posts here on the Refresh blog. It goes without saying that there is so much going on in our industry that we simply cannot cover it all on our own. With this in mind, we would like to unveil our guest blogger program and welcome anyone willing to share news, insights or opinions.

The Way Forward, Part Two

Friday, July 24th, 2009 | By: Justin Kozuch

This morning, we met with Donnie Claudino and we talked about higher-level strategies with respect to figuring out who we are and what we are doing. We talked about our goals and vision and he raised an important point when we started talking about the challenges of building a community.

To preface, I’ve always stated that this community is not about us, it’s about you. And when I posted yesterday about our community-building strategy, I neglected to ask a very important question:

What are you looking to gain from being a member of our community? What kind of people/topics would like to see discussed on our blog, on the Refresh Events Twitter, and at our monthly gatherings? We’re looking to engage in a conversation with you about how we can improve our programming.

Instead of blasting out a questionnaire, we’d like to try an experiment. We are going through event registration lists to pick 10 repeat attendees for a 1-on-1 interview. If you have not attended an event before (or even if you have), but are interested in the programming that we offer, we’d like to talk with you (we’ll buy the coffee!). Drop us a note or hit us up on Twitter, and let’s talk.
