Today’s Downtime: An Explanation

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009 | By: Refresh Events

At approximately 11:45am EST today, MediaTemple began experiencing some latency issues with Cluster 2, the server that the refresh-events.ca site used to reside on. Within an hour, the server was rebooted, however, the latency issue was still not resolved. At this point, the traffic that Cluster 2 was experiencing was so high that our site became very slow and we had limited access to FTP, email and other services.

By 1:40pm EST, the issue was resolved. However, during this time, we had accelerated our plans to move to a new server, one that is closer to Toronto, and offers better latency and connection times. You may have noticed over the past few weeks that our site was slow to load and respond. The server move we completed today was the only other option we had left to exhaust in an effort to speed up the delivery of our content.

We would like to apologize for the downtime we experienced earlier today. At this point, we believe that no data was corrupted during the downtime or during the server move. We also believe that we have experienced no interruption in mail delivery. If you sent us an email between the times listed above and you don’t receive a reply from us within the next 48 hours, please resend the email to ensure delivery. If the matter is urgent and requires our immediate attention, please call 647.236.1925.

Again, we apologize for any inconvenience caused by the downtime we experienced today.

FacebookCamp is an unconference for everyone with an interest in building on the Facebook Platform. FacebookCamp brings together developers, marketers, strategists, technologists, and students, in an open and collaborative environment of sharing and learning. We attended last to get the latest on what Facebook is up to, as well as seeing what Facebook developers are working on. The highlight of the evening was a presentation by Matt Wyndowe, who works in Business Development on the Facebook Platform team.

Implementing Flash with JavaScript

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009 | By: Justin Kozuch

If you’ve ever worked with Flash and HTML (and who hasn’t?), we’ve all come to a point where we need to embed a Flash movie into an HTML page. This is usually the same point where you cringe, especially if you need to validate your HTML/XHTML (and you should!). Embedding Flash can result in an ugly mess of code like this one:

<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000"
   codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=7,0,0,0"
   width="550" height="400" id="Untitled-1" align="middle">
<param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" />
<param name="movie" value="mymovie.swf" />
<param name="quality" value="high" />
<param name="bgcolor" value="#ffffff" />
<embed src="mymovie.swf" quality="high" bgcolor="#ffffff" width="550"
   height="400" name="mymovie" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain"
   type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer" />
</object>
