FacebookCamp is an unconference for everyone with an interest in building on the Facebook Platform. FacebookCamp brings together developers, marketers, strategists, technologists, and students, in an open and collaborative environment of sharing and learning. We attended last to get the latest on what Facebook is up to, as well as seeing what Facebook developers are working on. The highlight of the evening was a presentation by Matt Wyndowe, who works in Business Development on the Facebook Platform team.

A few very interesting Facebook usage statistics that came out of last night:

  • 3 out of 5 fbFund winners are Canadian companies. fbFund was a competition in which there were 5 winners who received funding for their work. Canadian winners were HitGrab, Kontagent, and WedSnap. More details about fbFund
  • 70% of Facbook users live OUTSIDE of the United States.
  • 50% of users are out of college.
  • Fastest growing demographic? 30 years of age, and up.
  • Average user has approximately 120 friends.
  • 3 billion minutes are spent on Facebook each month worldwide.

The Canadian stats were also quite impressive:

  • 1 out of 2 Canadians are on Facebook. This is impressive, and probably has a great deal of influence over the number of worldwide Facebook users.
  • Canadians spend an average of 29.6 minutes on Facebook every day…
  • … visiting the site 2.7 times per day.
  • 54% of Canadians are Daily Active Users (DAU) of Facebook.
  • 70% of Torontonians are on Facebook. I knew the numbers were high, but that is impressive.

Usage statistics around Facebook and CNN during the Obama Inauguration:

  • 2 million status updates over the course of the entire event
  • 8500 status updates per minute during the Inauguration Speech alone
  • Some more interesting stats, courtesy of Mashable

Facebook Connect was the topic of the evening. Facebook Connect allows you to connect you and your website to Facebook for single sign on, socializing of content, etc. Approximately 6,000 websites have adopted Facebook Connect, including CNET, Techcrunch and others. Facebook Connect has also been adopted offline, it is now part of Apple iPhoto.

Interested in learning about what effect implementing Facebook Connect has on your site? According to Facebook, implementing Facebook Connect means:

  • Registrations for your site increase 20-100%…
  • … creating 15-60% more content…
  • … resulting in each story published getting seen by 30-40 friends…
  • … and generating 1-3 clicks back to your site.

If you aren’t on Facebook Connect, get on it. It’s free and easy to implement.

A few other highlights from the evening… A presentation by Refresh Partners on the Whopper Sacrifice Campaign. 233,906 people participated in sacrificing their friends for a whopper over a 10 day period. 60,000 installs of Whopper Sacrifice Facebook application in 10 days. Presentation by ZipAlong (trip planner and organizer), and WedSnap (wedding planning tools).

Overall, it was an awesome event. Big thank you to Matt from Facebook for coming out to speak, and to Colin and Roy from Refresh Partners, as well as Andrew Cherwenka from Trapeze for setting it up.
