Organizing for Toronto’s Digital Media Industry

Monday, January 25th, 2010 | By: Justin Kozuch

A few weeks prior, I published a summary of DigitalMediaCamp, along with details about a few sessions I led discussing the lack of data surrounding Toronto’s Digital Media sector.

Since then, a conversation has been convened at a high level with various organizations in Toronto and the GTA, and our next steps have been determined.

While this announcement is being posted to the Refresh Events blog, note that this is not a Refresh Events-led initiative; it is one of a personal interest outside of the realm of our mandate.

With this in mind, I am now prepared to open the conversation to the digital media community in Toronto (and beyond).

The question we are asking is:

As digital media workers, who are we? How can we work together to learn more about our industry?

I’d like to personally invite you to our Google Group to help us chart the direction for this initiative over the coming months. If you have an interest in the future of our digital media industry, are employed in said industry in some capacity (production, management, etc), are interested in data and research, or have ideas on how to create partnerships and secure funding for such an initiative, we would love to hear your thoughts on how we can begin the process of determining the size and scope of our industry.

Because this week is a slow week due to a return from the holiday break, we’ve decided to include events from next week as well.

So without any further ado, here’s what’s happening in Toronto over the next 2 weeks:

Entrepreneurship

CIBC Presents Entrepreneurship 101: Lived-it Lecture featuring Michael H. McCain (January 6th 2010, 5:30-6:30pm)
MaRS Discovery District (101 College St)

Michael McCain, President and CEO of Maple Leaf Foods shares his experiences in running Canada’s leading food processor and exporter.

This is part of a series of “Lived It” lectures in the program, sessions that offer a great opportunity to hear firsthand and ask questions about the experience of starting up an innovative company – from people who have seen it and done it. Tickets (free event)

Toronto Entrepreneur Advisory Roundtable #3
January 14th 2010, 6:00pm-9:00pm
Centre for Social Innovation, 4th Floor (Alterna Meeting Room) (215 Spadina Ave)

If you are a small business owner or social-entrepreneur interested in growing your business, start the New Year with an interactive and collaborative experience. On January 14th, 2010, join our team of consultants for The Toronto Entrepreneur Advisory Roundtable. Six experienced consultants will meet with a small group of entrepreneurs (20 maximum) to offer advice, resources and brainstorming for your business issues. Tickets (pricing structure varies)

Technology

Augmented Reality Toronto Initial Meeting! (January 6th 2010, 7:00pm)
The Charlotte Room (19 Charlotte Street)

Initial meeting of the Augmented Reality Toronto group. Tickets (free event)

Unfinished Business Lecture Series – David Eaves: After the Collapse (January 14th 2010, 6:45pm-8:15pm)
OCAD, Main Auditorium (100 McCaul Street)

What do Facebook, 911 and NASA all have in common? They all offer us a window into how our industrial era government may be redesigned for the digital age. In this lecture David Eaves will look at how open methodologies, technology and social change is reshaping the way public service and policy development will be organized and delivered in the future: more distributed, adaptive and useful to an increasingly tech savvy public. Whether a interested designer, a disruptive programmer, a restless public servant or a curious citizen David will push your thinking on what the future has in store for the one institution we all rely on: Government. Tickets (free event)

Journalism

ONA Toronto: January Meetup (January 7th 2010, 7:00pm)
The Jason George (100 Front Street East)

Come hang out with Toronto-area online journalists. We’ll be discussing social media staff policies. Does your news organization have one?

If you’re on Twitter, we’re going to use the #ONATO hashtag. Find me @AngelaPacienza. Tickets (free event)

Community/Civic Engagement

Design with Dialogue, January 13th 2010, 6:00pm-9:00pm
sLAB | Strategic Innovation Lab @ OCAD (100 McCaul Street)

An important event in Toronto in 2010 will be the municipal election. It is a chance for Torontonians to have a collective conversation about the city we want, and to make the election one instrument in creating that desired future. In keeping with the spirit of the Designing with Dialogue group of encouraging positive change, Daniel and Mark will guide the group through some of the theory and techniques espoused by Peter Block, a change maker from Cincinnati, Ohio. Block has written a book called “Community” that outlines techniques and conversations for deepening civic engagement. We will have a chance to learn about some of Block’s work and practice some of the techniques. Tickets (free event)

Mobile

What does the New iPhone and 3.0 SDK Mean for iPhone Developers? (January 14th 2010, 6:30pm)

The 3.1 SDK allows in-app purchases so developers can offer subscription content and provide the ability to sell new content and features in a simple and secure process from directly within their apps. Meanwhile, game developers can leverage the new peer-to-peer connections support to more easily create peer-to-peer network games for iPhone and iPod touch by using Bluetooth.

In this meetup developers will discuss how they are making use of these new features, particularly in regard to monetization. Tickets (free event)
