“The Art of Community” by Jono Bacon

Monday, September 21st, 2009 | By: Justin Kozuch

This is going to be a short post, but we felt that this was just too important not to write about.

Earlier today, David McKendrick (@DavidAndGoliath) caught our attention with a tweet about an e-book he had found, titled “The Art of Community”, written by Jono Bacon. Naturally, it caught our eye, so we fired up Safari and headed for Google.

What’s interesting about this book is not that it’s about community (although that is interesting in itself), but that it was released under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike license. What’s even more interesting is that this was done by O’Reilly, one of the world’s largest book publishers.

If you’re a community builder or interested in learning how to build a community, this book was certainly written for you. Download “The Art of Community”, or purchase it from any of these Amazon sites:

What do you think about O’Reilly’s move to release a book under Creative Commons? Are they beginning to embrace a “freemium” business model? Or is it simply one-off behaviour that we shouldn’t expect in the future?
