For the past few weeks, we’ve been hard at work putting together a unique event taking place in July 2010. And while we are not ready to make an announcement just yet, we do want to involve you in the process of organizing this event.
Background Information
When it comes to data about the digital media industry in Toronto, unfortunately we’re getting the short end of the stick. The City of Toronto has very little available information on their site; the data they do have is 5 years old. When you compare Toronto with other Canadian cities (Vancouver, Calgary, and Winnipeg for example), we’re just not providing investors, potential customers and corporations with a good business case to spend money in Toronto, or establish satellite offices above the 49th Parallel.
Why is this happening? Why is it that we know so much about the behavior of Internet users in Canada, but know so little about those employed in the digital media industry in our own backyard? Where’s the disconnect? Is there a lack of funding? Are there not enough people dedicated to the task? Do we not know how to effectively measure the size of our industry?
I took a look at the results of the 2008 A List Apart Web Designers Survey, and from the 30,057 web practitioners (designers, information architects, project managers, etc) who completed the survey, only 240 of them were from Toronto.
Does anyone else find this statistic alarming? We do.
How can I help?
You’re probably asking yourself “What does this have to do with your event?”. In short, ALOT.
We’re in the process of finalizing the sponsorship documents for this event, but without any current demographic data about Toronto’s digital media industry, it will be difficult to give sponsors a clear picture of what the event will look like.
So, to help collect this data, we’re conducting a survey of digital media professionals in Toronto. Whether you’re a web designer, technologist, interface designer, visual designer, project manager or social media specialist (or anywhere in between), please consider giving us approximately 10 minutes of your time to fill out this survey. The data you provide us will make it easier for potential sponsor to project a value to the advertising opportunity.
What’s in it for me?
None of the data in the survey is personally identifiable and is completely anonymous. Please note that data from this survey will be made available online. Upon successful completion of the survey, you’ll be given a discount code that you can use to get 15% off the ticket price of this event, as well as any of our workshops.
Note: Thank you to Rachel Young for graciously providing feedback and copywriting services for this survey.
