We’re Looking For A New Venue

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 | By: Justin Kozuch

I’ve always been incredibly proud of the Toronto community. Were it not for them, we wouldn’t be growing in the ways that we are.

Attendance to our events is increasing, we’re seeing new faces each month, and we’ve been fortunate enough to meet some very interesting people in the process. We’ve also recently started the Weekly Community Events Guide, a listing of the upcoming events in the tech/web/social media scene in Toronto. And finally, we’ve opened the Refresh Events Meetup Group and started to record video of our events (we’ll be creating a separate podcast and releasing the first episode soon).

For the past 10 months, we’ve been meeting at the Centre for Social Innovation. And while we will continue to work in this amazing building, we’re faced with the issue of overwhelming growth in terms of event attendance. As such, we are renewing the search for a larger venue. In the past, we’ve had to cap event attendance numbers at 60. While this was acceptable given our growth, it’s no longer sustainable or acceptable.

As such, we have renewed our search for new space for our monthly gatherings. Our requirements are simple:

  • Screen + projector
  • Overhead sound system
  • Stage
  • Capacity for 100-200 people

To give you an example of the type of venue that we are looking for, The Pilot in Yorkville (home of the SproutUp gatherings) has the facilities that we are in need of. A venue with a bar is also a requirement.

If you have any suggestions for venues, we’d love to hear them. We’re working on a short list of spaces, but we’d love to add yours to the list! Drop us a line, @ or DM us on Twitter or give us a call at 647.236.1925.

UPDATE: We’ve secured a new venue for our monthly gatherings.

  • I'm sure that you will be able to find a suitable facility for your event/conference.
  • I was going to suggest Ryerson may be a potential location that can be used. However, the only requirement that Ryerson as a venue will not be able to meet is, they do not have a bar!

Apart from that, I think Ryerson would meet all your other requirements quite well.
  • Ryerson has GREAT facilities. We did our iPhone workshop there in June, and I love the venue. Too bad it doesn't have a bar, though.
