CaseCamp Conference: September 16th 2009

CaseCamp Logo

On Wednesday, September 16th, CaseCamp will celebrate its tenth function in Toronto with a special, day-long event that will bring cutting-edge practitioners from across North America together for a superb learning and networking opportunity. What’s more, this event will raise funds for an exciting project at SickKids Hospital.

The CaseCamp “unconference” was born in 2006, when social media was still new media. CaseCamp grew from the need for a unique, community-oriented space for creative professionals to connect with one another socially, and exchange stories from the field. This practical, peer-to-peer learning model took off. You liked it, and we grew.

Staying true to its community roots, CaseCamp Benefit promises to deliver a ton of energy, inspiration, and some surprises.

This day-long event is divided into two parts, giving you some options:

(1) The afternoon CaseCamp Conference will offer a strong grounding in internet culture to those who are looking for a thorough crash course on social media strategy and tactics. Not your average 101, this afternoon will combine a playful line of educational content with intriguing speakers, varying points of view and an assortment of practitioners from the field. This event will feature plenty of both networking and tacos. Entry costs $99.

(2) The evening CaseCamp Classic will stick to the original formula of four case model presentations followed by fun and drinks. This evening event is free. Donations towards the SickKids fundraiser are welcome.

Refresh Events is proud to be the media sponsor for the next edition of CaseCamp. As such, we have 5 passes to give away to 5 random people. Entering is easy! Simply tell us in the comments section below why you would like to attend CaseCamp. We’ll be choosing 5 of the most creative responses next Thursday September 3rd Tuesday September 15th at 12:00pm EST. (For bonus points, record a video, and post the link in the comments section!) The deadline for all submissions is Wednesday September 2nd Monday September 14th at 5:00pm EST. Good luck!

Want to help us spread the word about CaseCamp? Download this flyer and email it to your friends and colleagues, post it up at work, or give it out to perfect strangers.

Thank You

When the idea to create a organization designed to help connect and educate those in Toronto’s interactive & marketing community came to us in July of 2008, little did we know that we were about to embark on the journey of a lifetime. We didn’t have many connections, we didn’t have much money, but we knew that the people of Toronto deserved better, that they would find value in a community built around those values of creating connections, providing educational opportunities, discussing the pressing issues and navigating the new landscape of our industry.

But it wasn’t until the first hohoTO on December 15th, 2008 when we realized that our community could come together to be part of something bigger, something that could change the way we meet, learn and interact with others. And we knew we wanted to be the force that could help drive this change.

And while we have experienced our fair share of ups and downs, and faced numerous challenges and opposition, we have emerged stronger and more committed to our cause. We have had the chance to meet many incredibly talented individuals through our Dark Horse Friday’s initiative, we’ve seen first hand the effects our gatherings have on people, and we consider ourselves very fortunate to have been there to help create these new connections.

We are grateful for each day and each opportunity we have to help connect you with the people you would like to meet, to help find you find employees or get work, to aid in the creation of partnerships and alliances, and collaborate with each other. We take great pride in the quality of our monthly gatherings, and the support we have from the community is more valuable to us than anything else.

We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of you who have spoken at and attended our events. To those of you who have supported us by spreading the word about what we do. To those of you who have emailed and called with your offers of assistance; we couldn’t have done it without you and the inspiring spirit of service you’ve shown us over the past 12 months.

Here’s to the next year, and many more to come. We’ll see you tonight.

Twitter as an Emergency Broadcast System

Friday, August 21st, 2009 | By: Justin Kozuch

If you live in Toronto, then surely you know that a massive storm swept through yesterday evening, dumping rain and debris onto city streets. At one point, funnel clouds touched down at the foot of Jarvis Street (only 2 streets away from where I’m sitting).

Dave Fleet wrote an excellent post this morning, “A Quick Social Media Analysis Of The Toronto Storm“, and it got me thinking. Given the number of Twitter users in Toronto, and that Twitter supports SMS notifications, can Twitter be used as an Emergency Broadcast System?

Community Interviews

Thursday, August 20th, 2009 | By: Justin Kozuch

A few weeks ago, we wrote a blog post entitled “The Way Forward, Part Two“. In it, we asked a series of questions centred around improving our product.

You may have noticed today that we launched the Guest Blogger Program. This was borne out of a meeting we had early on with a member of our community. We have since sifted through our attendee registration lists and have selected core members of our community, and those emails will be sent out today (some of you have already responded, thank you!).

These interviews are centred around 4 questions:

  1. What do you like about our events?
  2. What do you dislike about our events?
  3. Who would you like to hear speak at our events?
  4. If you could change one thing about what we do, what would it be?

But we’re not just sticking with that core group. We’d like to hear from you as well! If you have attended an event in the past (or even if you haven’t), and you’re interested in the programming that we offer, we’d like to talk with you. Drop us a note or hit us up on Twitter to setup a meeting (we’ll even buy the coffee!). Alternatively, you can post up in the comments below. ↓

Guest Blogger Program

Thursday, August 20th, 2009 | By: Justin Kozuch

We’re always happy to have people write guest posts here on the Refresh blog. It goes without saying that there is so much going on in our industry that we simply cannot cover it all on our own. With this in mind, we would like to unveil our guest blogger program and welcome anyone willing to share news, insights or opinions.
